Ocular Complications of AIDS

Our normally functioning immune system keeps in check the myriad of typically innocuous infectious which perpetually harass our bodies. Chicken Pox, Mononucleosis and Herpes Simplex Mouth Ulcers are all examples of childhood viral illnesses which our bodies control over days to weeks typically without difficulty.

By selectively impairing the body's immune system AIDS makes us defenseless against otherwise benign infectious agents. Some of these agents such as Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Varicella Zoster Virus directly target retinal nerve tissue irreversibly destroying nerve fibers with blindness as the result. Fortunately, improved diagnosis and better drug delivery of antiviral agents directly into the eye has greatly curbed the rate of blindness associated with these diseases, provided treatment is undertaken quickly.
