The
tremendous advances in vitreoretinal surgical techniques
over the last twenty-five years now allow microsurgical
manipulation of retinal nerve tissue including
abnormal growths below the surface of the retina.
We now employ such techniques to remove abnormal
vessels from beneath in patients with inflammatory
choroidal neovascular membranes, ocular histoplasmosis,
trauma and occasionally in patients with age related
macular degeneration. Despite technical advancements,
the indications for these interventions remains
the focus of a host of ongoing scientific studies.
